As of September 1st 2015, the maximum payment limit for contactless card purchases has been increased from £20 to £30 thus allowing shoppers to pay for higher value goods via the popular and ever growing contactless method.
A huge number of consumers within the UK are completing their purchases via the contactless payment option. The UK Cards Association suggest that 81.2 million contactless card transactions were made in June 2015 alone, an increase of 9.6% on the previous month.
The release of Apple Pay at the end of July 2015 only reinforces the confidence the industry has in this revolutionary new payment method. Apple Pay enables customers to pay for their items at the checkout using the contactless technology (NFC – Near Field Communication) integrated within their iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. The payment limit for Apple Pay has also been increased to £30.
From January 2016 contactless card terminals will become the industry standard therefore all new deployments of card machines from this date will support NFC/contactless technology.
As of July 2015, over £2.5 billion worth of payments have been made within the UK via the contactless method.
